This particular piece was inspired because of my participation with 12art. Some of us are walking in November in the 3Day walk (20 miles a day for 3 days). This is not a charity auction but rather an awareness auction.

New Work... Fall's First Moon

I finally got sick of handling the art end of business, and ran out of writing on the piece I'm working on.  For the moment.  AND, the art has been hammering on the back of my head.

So I would like to introduce you to:

The Heart Of One Good Dog

The Heart Of One Good Dog
Pen & Ink; Loree Harrell; 2001

I find myself hoping today - the eighth day - that we might find a dog. Because they searched and died, too. And I immediately questioned my priorities, my compassion. How could I even wish for a dog with thousands of humans missing? Perhaps it is because so very little of me can believe anymore in finding even one of thousands alive, and all of me veers from touching the thought even of what the details of a person living this long under the devastation would have to be. But a dog. A beautiful dog that we could rescue and heal and cry over and every one of us hold as our own. Who could not be forced, by our need, to speak too soon or to live a life in public when all he wanted was to go home to hug his wife and crawl between clean sheets. One extraordinary dog - pure courage and love and pride - in front of the cameras, brushed and panting and simply ecstatic that somehow in his survival he pleased us.

Just even a dog right now.
One last sign to know we are done waiting.
One reward for all of our work and tears and love and hope.

Please.

The Fruit Begets The Shadow

The Fruit; 2003 12x16 oil on canvas; Loree Harrell

Cinderella Meets The Shadow
from Sandwich In A Glass
Loree Harrell; 1999

I try once and again to write fairy tales, but somehow they always turn back in on themselves and show me their dark underbellies. Or perhaps more truly, they show me mine.

There are no princes here. No one's life is all cute little bunnies and sweet-smelling pussy cats and blue skies - fairy tales and nursery rhymes are some of the most gruesome stories ever told. Ever read any of the originals before they got sanitized for our western tastes? The gingerbread house is the most terrifying place on the planet. Ring-Around-The-Rosie is about the Plague. Maybe we just understood layers back then. Didn't have such a tendency to accept face value.

Writers have only one thing to tell, one thing to sell.
You can't be Nice and be a Writer. Choose.
Everyone is not going to like you. You will sometimes step on some toes. When you do it right, you're going to feel like you're walking around in the world with no seat in your jeans.
Tell your stories. Tell them clearly, tell them honestly, or shut the hell up and go write advertising copy. Or formulaic potboilers... there can be money and accolades in those, too. Lots, sometimes.

Oh. And don't lose your sense of humor in the process.

Cry when you have to, but laugh when you feel like it, too. Let me in to feel that happen and I'll buy every word you write.

New Work: A New Shade Of Gold by Loree Harrell

Finished a fun work today... I've done some painting on lamps I just had around and loved them, so when a client saw one and requested I do some for sale, I agreed. Last week I finally did some hunting, and came across a shade I liked. They take quite a long time, in several wash-consistency layers to make sure I maintain the translucence of the shade, but the first one is in the bag, with three more waiting in the wings. I'm thinkin' blue next.

A New Shade Of Gold
Original Abstract Art Lampshade

I am listing the shades under my BuzzArt i.d. on Etsy until my website
is up and running. This one is several layers of acrylic ink & metallics,
with a final wash of gloss amber. 55.00 5.00 shipping (shade only).

The Heads Series: The Lion Meets The ShadeTree

Where The Lion Meets The Shade Tree
Acrylic Enamel On Glass  250.00
Loree Harrell; 2004

This series of Heads has been on hold for the past year - bowing to my current obsession with woodstain.  At one point, I had ten of these living under paintings around my studio - then all but the three I was holding back  sold during two open studios. .  I need to get back to them... the Heads Series is one of my favorite.

Take a look at my original & print portfolio!

Two Paintings And A Few Words...

Full Moon Rising
11x14 Woodstain on Coldpress
2006; Loree Harrell

I seem to be feeling somewhat mute tonight, so we'll do a piece of art, and a couple short writings, and another piece of art, and say good night.

Some Days The World
Loree Harrell; 2003

They were right there. And then they weren't. It was only a matter of seconds in between and she knew, she KNEW, they had heard her calling. Knew they still could and were ignoring her, whether out of simple bullheadedness, or Greater Good, it just really didn't matter just then.

First she got angry and said, Fine... Just Stay Away Then. Then she got hurt and said, Why Don't You Love Me Enough. Then she knew she was just scared and said, Please.

That's when they came back.

And Then
Loree Harrell; 2003

"It was totally incongruent."
"I'm sorry, what? Faded out on you there for a minute."
"I said it was totally incongruent. Didn't make any sense at all."
"What was? Didn't?"
"What they said. It contradicted itself. Three different ways. At least."
"What who said?"
"All of Them. Anything could be interpreted to mean most anything if you really broke it down and looked at it hard enough."
"Like what?"
"Never mind."

What I Did With My New Series!

The Middle Of The Story Series
6 signed 5x5 prints; matted to 16x20
Loree Harrell; August 2006
$75.00

I spent the weekend working on a new six piece Series, then did some playing with the images and came up with this 16x20 format that I am temporarily enamored of. The originals of these prints are 4x4 woodstain on coldpress watercolor paper. Both the originals and the prints will be available on my Art Wanted site tomorrow. Tonight I'm getting some sleep.

Have a great week!
