I try once and again to write fairy tales, but somehow they always turn back in on themselves and show me their dark underbellies. Or perhaps more truly, they show me mine.
There are no princes here. No one's life is all cute little bunnies and sweet-smelling pussy cats and blue skies - fairy tales and nursery rhymes are some of the most gruesome stories ever told. Ever read any of the originals before they got sanitized for our western tastes? The gingerbread house is the most terrifying place on the planet. Ring-Around-The-Rosie is about the Plague. Maybe we just understood layers back then. Didn't have such a tendency to accept face value.
Writers have only one thing to tell, one thing to sell.
You can't be Nice and be a Writer. Choose.
Everyone is not going to like you. You will sometimes step on some toes. When you do it right, you're going to feel like you're walking around in the world with no seat in your jeans.
Tell your stories. Tell them clearly, tell them honestly, or shut the hell up and go write advertising copy. Or formulaic potboilers... there can be money and accolades in those, too. Lots, sometimes.
Oh. And don't lose your sense of humor in the process.
Cry when you have to, but laugh when you feel like it, too. Let me in to feel that happen and I'll buy every word you write.

Finished a fun work today... I've done some painting on lamps I just had around and loved them, so when a client saw one and requested I do some for sale, I agreed. Last week I finally did some hunting, and came across a shade I liked. They take quite a long time, in several wash-consistency layers to make sure I maintain the translucence of the shade, but the first one is in the bag, with three more waiting in the wings. I'm thinkin' blue next.

This series of Heads has been on hold for the past year - bowing to my current obsession with woodstain. At one point, I had ten of these living under paintings around my studio - then all but the three I was holding back sold during two open studios. . I need to get back to them... the Heads Series is one of my favorite.

I seem to be feeling somewhat mute tonight, so we'll do a piece of art, and a couple short writings, and another piece of art, and say good night.
Some Days The World

They were right there. And then they weren't. It was only a matter of seconds in between and she knew, she KNEW, they had heard her calling. Knew they still could and were ignoring her, whether out of simple bullheadedness, or Greater Good, it just really didn't matter just then.
First she got angry and said, Fine... Just Stay Away Then. Then she got hurt and said, Why Don't You Love Me Enough. Then she knew she was just scared and said, Please.
That's when they came back.
And Then
Loree Harrell; 2003
"It was totally incongruent."
"I'm sorry, what? Faded out on you there for a minute."
"I said it was totally incongruent. Didn't make any sense at all."
"What was? Didn't?"
"What they said. It contradicted itself. Three different ways. At least."
"What who said?"
"All of Them. Anything could be interpreted to mean most anything if you really broke it down and looked at it hard enough."
"Like what?"
"Never mind."

The Middle Of The Story Series
6 signed 5x5 prints; matted to 16x20
Loree Harrell; August 2006
$75.00
I spent the weekend working on a new six piece Series, then did some playing with the images and came up with this 16x20 format that I am temporarily enamored of. The originals of these prints are 4x4 woodstain on coldpress watercolor paper. Both the originals and the prints will be available on my Art Wanted site tomorrow. Tonight I'm getting some sleep.
Have a great week!
